DANCES WITH FILMS 2025 REVIEW! Patrick (Brian Regal) and David (Justin McHugh) are gig workers just trying to make a living in Los Angeles in their series pilot, Pick Me Up.
Every day is an adventure as Patrick and David go from job to job, picking up, packing, and moving boxes. Our tale begins with the pair relocating the belongings of their client’s mother to Goodwill, with disastrous results.
“Patrick and David must move Cliff’s belongings as he’s being kicked out of the house.”
Their next job is at the home of a couple on the verge of divorce: Alicia (Rocío López) and Cliff (Nat Anglin). Patrick and David must move Cliff’s belongings as he’s being kicked out of the house. Of course, Cliff doesn’t want to leave and pleads/threatens Patrick to leave his stuff, and as tensions mount, the Notary (John Henry Richardson) arrives.
Pick Me Up is a nice, tight seven minutes. As a potential web series, Patrick serves as the straight man in this crazy city with even crazier inhabitants. Although I’d like to see him more integrated into the storylines of each job, he risks becoming merely an observer of the craziness.
Otherwise, Pick Me Up is a solid story about the hustle and side hustles everyone goes through trying to survive in the comically brutal city of Los Angeles.
Pick Me Up screened at the 2025 Dances with Films.
