Director Kendall York’s Original Cut tells the story of a father and daughter who embark on a mission to track down the original piece of Star Wars lore from Facebook Marketplace. What unfolds on the drive there is a passionate, generational debate about a galaxy far, far away.
A father (Ron Preston) and his daughter (Halie Wise) find themselves on a special road trip that only true Star Wars fans can appreciate. Why? Throughout this trip, they are talking about Star Wars. Right off the bat, they argue about the importance of Han shooting first, then mourn the prequels, and then debate the sequels… who were those for? After hours of driving, we finally reach our destination.
Original Cut is a DIY tale by Kendall York of a father and daughter who see Star Wars from very different perspectives. The important point here is that they both love Star Wars…and that physical media is the only way to preserve these memories.

What is a negative can often be turned into a positive. The short film is shot from the back seat of a car, with our subject barely in profile, and the sound could have been better to make the dialogue clearer. Just the fact that I’ve had conversations like this and, obviously, Dad is right, makes Original Cut fun and engaging, particularly for its just under five-minute runtime.
Original Cut is a charming little slice of fandom that proves the love of Star Wars transcends generational divides. Director Kendall York reminds us that sometimes the journey — and the argument — is the whole point…and to save physical media.
