SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2021 REVIEWS! In My Layers, Susanne Serres explores the experience of artistic creation, psychosis, and recovery in a short experimental dance piece comprised of performers simulating aspects of the mind under duress. The main character/narrator is male-presenting, which may be a step removed (or layer away) from the director and writer, Serres. Or maybe not.
“…performers simulating aspects of the mind under duress.”
This film viscerally embodies someone’s truth to such a degree that all I can do is trust that the experience is honest and accurate to the lived reality. My Layers speaks to the necessity of creation: the importance of artists being able to create art to facilitate our own recovery from trauma, isolation, and despair; and the importance of the same art being appreciated for what it is, allowing others to understand where we are coming from.
My Layers screened at the 2021 Slamdance Film Festival.
"…facilitate our own recovery from trauma, isolation, and despair..."
It’s true, you need tou show and speak about psychosis. The silence of the deasese, how you feel so alone because no one can see what’s really happening – True and real, we can see inside the head, and understand the other.
