HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! In Mort, co-writer/director Giselle Bonilla and co-director Tu Do skillfully navigate the emotional landscape of their sci-fi drama. The titular alien, Mort (Tyler Steelman), leads a peaceful life on his world, caring for the local flora and fauna. However, his daily routine is disrupted when an astronaut (Valeria Camero) crash lands on the planet. The film explores whether these two beings, seemingly different, can find common ground and understanding.

“…his daily routine is disrupted when an astronaut crash lands on the planet.”

Mort’s look has a Sid and Marty Kroft vibe. Big, round edges create an odd but cute look. Steelman plays the part with the right amount of childlike wonder and silliness. Camero is also very good. Her body language is big and easy to read, which perfectly sells the emotions at the end.

Mort is cute, sad, and interesting. Mort’s costume and design are outstanding. The two leads excel at emoting through just their body language.

Mort screened at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival.
