First off, how delicious is it that financial swindlers funded a movie about financial swindlers? It would be like finding out Goodfellas was bankrolled by the mob. Second, Kim’s significant purpose here is to deglamorize the whole gangster aura by shifting the focus to the victims. We get many shots of these Blade Runner-like high rises. Then, the camera drops down to the low-laying slums of favelas, where many are still trapped. We are shown insanely rich people getting richer through crime while the folks that the fund was supposed to improve the lives of are left with the bill and interest with nothing to show for it. Kim expands the examination of blame on the banks and companies that collected massive fees for their services to the fraudsters. How much did these companies know that what was going on would drop through the door anyway? Kim keeps the questions hitting harder and harder.

“Kim expands the examination of blame on the banks and companies that collected massive fees for their services to the fraudsters.”

The biggest surprise is that Man On The Run is the first major party movie of 2024. Ever party to a financial malfeasance documentary? You haven’t truly partied until you have. Kim capitalizes on The Wolf Of Wall Street by making the documentary in the style of the montages of that movie. With wild editing and rampaging music, Kim hurtles history through a vertigo of outrage. It illuminates the viewer with a constant adrenaline rush. One of my favorite recurring elements is these grotesque caricatures of the main villains that crop up repeatedly. They keep spinning around you until you feel you are caught in Kim Wilde’s Kids in America video.

While this pedal-to-the-metal pacing may seem a little hyperbolic after a while, it is solid blackout perfect for getting numb in front of liquor or something else. The frantic canter goes along amazingly with the images of excess perpetually exploding on itself. This is perfect to have on in the background at that time of night when everyone tries to talk louder than everyone else. If you and your crew party while re-watching The Wolf Of Wall Street, then this is tailor f*****g made for your needs. Just be aware that gangsters may not seem so damn cool once you come out the other end.
