Growth

CINEQUEST 2026 FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW! Growth, directed by Dominic Russo, is a genuine and down-to-earth documentary that tackles a fascinating subject matter: can you joke about cancer? Writer /subject Bryan Bishop, a co-host on The Adam Carolla Show, helps answer that question by documenting his cancer journey. Back in 2009, Bishop had everything going for him, including his wedding to fiancée Christie. His life changed once he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. When Carolla heard about Bishop’s situation, he put on a fundraising stand-up show. This show made an impact on Bishop and his wife.

Ten years later, the man made the bold decision to host a charity stand-up comedy event, and all the money went to Stupid Cancer, a nonprofit organization for young adult cancer patients. To prepare for the event, he learns the craft of stand-up comedy and develops an earnest routine about living with the disease. He interviews talent like Maria Menounos, Nimesh Patel, and Julia Sweeney to see how they dealt with their cancer. During the Covid lockdowns, Bishop went through chemotherapy treatments. All the while, Christie faces the stress of this difficult treatment while raising their young daughter, Tessa. He handles this rough period with good spirits and continues to co-host Carolla’s podcast. Bryan Bishop with Christie and their daughter Tessa during a clinic visit in Growth.

“Back in 2009, Bishop had everything going for him, including his wedding to his fiancée, Christie. His life changed once he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.”

Russo handles the subject matter brilliantly. It is surprisingly educational and a thoughtful piece on the human condition. Bishop’s optimism is consistent, and his humble nature stands out. His comedy on cancer is natural, honest, and relatable. Tyler Gurd’s editing is subtle and allows everyone time to speak. His editing techniques appropriately match Bishop’s personality. The film forces us, the audience, to think about what it means to take on a difficult illness and still chug forward with relentless energy.

Growth stands out because it is neither grim nor saccharine in discussing cancer. If anything, it speaks to a need to use comedy for life’s difficult situations, without letting pearl-clutchers dampen the mood. Check this out because it proves that we can beat the odds and stay strong, even when faced with the worst possible situation.
