Sommer’s film is a celebration of knighthood, valor, and the raw beauty of chivalry. AI technology is heavily used throughout the film. The narration is provided by premade vocal performances, whereas the visuals are most likely created with popular software like Runway. This new form of animation creates imaginative and surreal medieval imagery. On an editing and structural level, Sommer goes for an unconventional approach. The film disregards the three-act structure in favor of oral storytelling. It will be an unusual experience for audiences!
While the fantastical AI imagery is awesome to look at, it disconnects with the narration. Sommer’s ambitious concept needed to be streamlined or possibly combined with live-action actors. The AI animation works best when depicting strange creatures and massive dragons. It is important to go into this film knowing this technology is in its experimental stage. With that mindset, Sebastian Sommer provides a new cinematic experience!
