After graduating, Thomas attended Yale School of Law. Thomas would realize that graduating from an Ivy League school only benefitted the white graduates and an Ivy League diploma meant very little for black graduates. No one would hire him…no one except Missouri Attorney General John Danforth. The idea of working for a Republican was distasteful to this lifelong Democrat. He worked long hours for little pay, but it was work.
It’s here that Clarence Thomas would lock in on the concept of “natural rights” found in the U.S. Constitution, where “all men are created equal” and “endowed with inalienable right by their Creator.” That the Constitution never allowed for slavery and segregation. Ideas that violated natural rights of all people all along.
From here, we all know the story of Clarence Thomas and his work with the EEOC under Reagan and his appointment to the Federal Court by Bush. Of course, he walks us through the Supreme Court confirmation process, the Anita Hill testimony, and his famous “hi-tech lynching” response to the Joe Biden and the Senate Judicial Committee.
“My review…is irrelevant because it’s going to have the same impact as my review of RBG…”
I find Clarence Thomas to be a fascinating man, just as much as I find Ruth Bader Ginsberg to be a fascinating woman. I get it. We live in a divided nation of them and us, Right and Left, and after you read this review, you and me. I personally like hearing from high profile people regardless of whether I agree with them politically or not. In fact, half of my Facebook friends hate the other half. I’ve always believed in the benefits of dissent and disagreement and the right for everyone to be heard.
My review of Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words is irrelevant because it’s going to have the same impact as my review of RBG, just flipped around. The Left will blindly hate it, and the Right will call it a film every person should see…which is the exact opposite reaction to RBG. Then a pointless back-and-forth will take place in the comments below and the world will continue to spin out of control.
Where I connect with Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words is the idea that there are principles that I’ve chosen to live by as a human being and as an American. This idea that I treat everyone with respect regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, and political point of view…period. To me, what is important is the content of your character.
I will beat this drum until I’m blue in the face, but we need to change the discourse of this national…global conversation. No apologies.
