Chiminey Tales is a streaming anthology horror series of short films created by Kristen B. Adams and Joshua Messarge. Tales are introduced by a storyteller (Joshua Messarge) sitting beside a fire. Each short story runs roughly 6 minutes and involves strange fables of the bizarre and macabre. One story is an animated clip about an Indigenous American woman weaving the tapestry of the world, another is an Exorcist style tale about a woman claiming the devil has come to steal her baby. In the third story, a woman reconciles with her past self.
“…tales introduced by a storyteller sat beside a fire…”
An OCD film writer note here: “Chiminey” seems to be an intentional, stylized misspelling of “chimney.” It’s an interesting choice and, in fact, may be simply another horrific element of the series. The fireplace device used is a “chiminea,” but it’s hard to imagine the title to be a typo. Also, the storyteller pronounces it “chiminey,” in the same way Dick Van D**e does in Mary Poppins. The point is that there is no dictionary word “chiminey.”
The short segments are whimsical and appropriately creepy as horror soundbites. They are shot in low light, with minor chord music gliding through the soundtrack. The storyteller intones his greetings and farewells. If you’re not in the mood for Halloween, Chiminey Tales can help.
