Warning: The following movie review concerns a documentary about witchcraft, Satanism, and occult rituals. The reviewer cannot be held responsible for what may happen to you while watching the dark ritual footage in A Cursed Man, written and directed by Liam Le Guillou. Guillou is an English filmmaker living in Los Angeles who has been entranced by unexplained phenomena since the age of ten. He does not believe in magic so much as someone who would love to find proof that it is real.
To achieve this, he embarks on an unusual quest: Guillou is trying to commission a black magic practitioner to curse him so that he can know for sure whether magic is real. He starts on a tour of the centers of witchcraft throughout the world, starting in his own backyard. Guillou meets with Griffin Ced and Carrie Wolf, who is a Los Angeles-based witch father and witch mother in the Ced tradition. They refuse to curse him, as they think willfully subjecting yourself to a curse is plain stupid. However, they do agree to cast a witch’s ladder on him, which will make him more susceptible to the world of magic.
“New Orleans Voodoo priest Divine Prince Ty Emmecca…tells Guillou, ‘You are knocking on the door of the devil in order to prove God exists.'”
He also meets with Dean Radin, chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), in order to get a less spiritual, more clinical perspective. He then treks to New Orleans to meet with voodoo priestess Lilith Dorsey for advice on how to proceed among the magic community there. New Orleans Voodoo priest Divine Prince Ty Emmecca is offended by the entire idea, telling Guillou, “You are knocking on the door of the devil in order to prove God exists.” However, Sen Elias, a hoodoo practitioner, understands the point of the project and agrees to curse Guillou on camera. Things start to happen.
To study the reactions scientifically, he enlists John G. Kruth, Executive Director at the Rhine Research Center, which specializes in ESP. He also brings Dr. Michelle D’Amico, psychologist, onboard to consult when he goes much further into the world of the dark arts.
