The feature film Tickling Giants asks, “Are you brave enough to tell a joke?” The documentary by Sara Taksler tells the story of Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef, who gets in lots of trouble for speaking his mind and, yes, telling jokes. (Youssef’s show was wildly popular in Egypt with 30 million viewers per episode. By comparison, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart averaged about two million viewers a night.) Youssef’s routinely insulted the Egyptian President, receiving death threats and doing comedy at his own risk. Based on what we’ve seen from the trailer, this doc is worth seeking out. (A review will follow soon on Film Threat.)
