Justin Chon Making Leaps in Directing with Ms. Purple

I liked it because it’s not a way I’ve seen brothers and sisters interact in film.
I have a daughter. A challenge I wanted to feel her love for the father, and I think I accomplished that. I do feel like you feel her undying love for her dad.

What experience from Ms. Purple did you get that you’re going to then take on to your next film?
I learned a lot about working with my actors. It was pretty difficult. This was both their first movies. And having been acting for a while, there are certain things I took for granted. I had to learn a lot about patience…and about being a better leader. Every film I’ve made, I’ve made mistakes. I admit that. The biggest thing, I’ve got to acknowledge them and learn from them. And in this film, just the lesson of patience. And I have a very rushing attitude. I try to make things go fast. There are certain things you just cannot rush.

“I had to learn a lot about patience…and about being a better leader.”

Would I change the experience? Maybe a little bit, but for the most part, no. Because I had to experience it in this way to learn. This film was very heavy. And I wish I wasn’t as heavy on the set. I wish I had a little bit more levity, and I thought that was necessary. I’m not quite sure. But going to the next film, I think making a film with a little bit more joy. I’m still learning. Gook, there was more joy. This one was tough because of the subject matter. But the next one, I think I want to bring a little more joy to the process. Yeah.

All right, well thank you very much. It’s such a fantastic film.
Thank you, thank you. Appreciate it.
