BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID
Reader Jesse Banda also suggested this unquestionably great Western. Here’s how one colleague described director George Roy Hill:
“George had a great eye for truth. There wasn’t any hesitation or indecision. He knew precisely what he wanted in a scene he knew what he wanted from his actors.”
THE INCREDIBLES
Reader Nicholas D’Amico added our only animated nomination. And he thought the sequel met the first movie’s promise:
“The character animation was amazing – the body language, the expressions, the modeling. I have to admit I was a bit skittish about seeing it. I had such admiration for the first one that I was concerned that I’d be let down but all the advances Pixar made in their techniques over the years really paid off in Incredibles 2 … It was in no way the disappointment I feared it would be. It holds a proud place in my Blu-ray collection, right next to the original.”
Here’s a video essay that breaks it all down…
THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER II
Reader Nicholas D’Amico thought both these films were perfect, except for a single caveat:
“…except for that shot when Sonny was beating up Carlo and managed to connect with a punch that missed by a good 8 inches at least…”
Of course, you need to watch it for yourself!
THE MONEY PIT
Walt Barnett added this often overlooked pick from the Tom Hanks catalog.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Thanks to Christian White for the recommendation. This movie still has some of the darkest lines ever uttered by a murderous character.
And has one of the greatest shootouts ever filmed…
Great list!
