RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
Reader Sean Richardson started things off with two Steven Spielberg pictures:
“I think “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “E.T.: the Extra Terrestrial” are perfect movies, possibly the only time a director did back-to-back perfect movies in such quick succession.”
Can you think of anybody else who matched that feat? Film School Rejects did a fun breakdown of all the perfect shots in Raiders. And check out this video about light and shadow in the film.
TOUCH OF EVIL
Canadian filmmaker Apostoly Peter Kouroumalis added a few movies to our list:
“Ivan the Terrible or Touch of Evil. I’m on the fence about those two, but der Blu Engel comes close too.”
The opening crane shot work from Touch of Evil is justifiably famous, but we also think it is worth the price of admission for this other tracking scene.
16 CANDLES
John Hughes only got one nomination on this list. Reader Clarissa Jacobson told us why she loves this film so much:
“GENIUS underrated screenwriter. A lot of movies I could add, but I always wanna shout out Hughes because he is the best at portraying teens even to this day.”
TAMPOPO
Reader Cavorticus adds Jûzô Itami’s “ramen western” to our list. Watch the trailer for a recent 4K restoration of the perfect comedy.
TAXI DRIVER
Reader Christopher Bickel brings up this classic movie that had a big influence on JOKER. Check out the shot-by-shot comparisons from GOAT Movie Podcast.

THE MATRIX
20 years later, and we can’t stop thinking about this film. Here’s a look at some of the philosophy underneath the perfect movie…
Great list!
