Gaming is one of the world’s favorite past times, with millions of gamers regularly loading up their favourite titles. With the advances in technology, it has made it possible for the gaming genre to widen and ideas are now shared across a variety of platforms. As a result, today gaming encompasses everything from Pacman and eSports Overwatch League to bingo and Royal Vegas online casino games.
When players aren’t gaming, however, they’re often found watching movies based on video games. Which is excellent news as there are so many hit movies from this genre which have hit both the large and smaller screens over the years, and we’ve picked out some of the best below.
Detective Pikachu
Pokémon has undoubtedly made a significant impact on pop culture over the years, spreading its wings further than the realms of gaming. Recently, it’s enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence where games are concerned, and it made an impact at the box office too with Detective Pikachu. The movie tells the story of a missing detective, with his son and Detective Pikachu trying to find out what happened to detective Harry Goodman.
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat is a game which has gained iconic status, with many gamers suggesting it’s one of the finest franchises ever created. With the franchise being so popular and very successful, it made sense for a film to be released, which it was in back in ’95. Lord Rayden selects a trio of martial artists to mentor, with the aim for them to compete at Outworld, where a fighting tournament takes place. Rayden’s three charges must take on and defeat Shang Sung’s three demonic warriors or face the prospect of Sung and evil taking over the planet.
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is without doubt one of the most successful gaming franchises of all time, and one of its keys to success is its lead character, Lara Croft. Built on a unique idea, Tomb Raider sees Croft take adventuring to the next level, making her and the premise perfect for both games and movies. There have been several Tomb Raider films to hit the screens so far, but the latest which released in 2018 is our pick, as it sees Lara go in search of her father, who went missing in mysterious circumstances years earlier.
Assassin’s Creed
Assassin’s Creed, which made a massive impact on the gaming market on release in 2007, quickly established itself as another top-rated franchise. Creators Ubisoft combines action, adventure and stealth ideally to create what is a unique concept. It’s success, like the other games in this list, has spread further than gaming. They branched out by developing a movie, and it impressed, especially as they hired an all-star cast. In the film Cal Lynch goes back to 15th century Spain, as he aims to gain the knowledge required to take on an oppressive regime in the current day.
With so many hit movies perfect for gamers, it proved difficult to pick out the best, but the ones above certainly won’t disappoint. They all do their game series and storylines justice and are perfect for people who have played the games, as general film fans too, which is the ideal combination.
