18th century player Giacomo Casanova, near the end of his life, escapes from prison and flees to France where he begins to write his memoirs of a magnificent life as the greatest seducer of all time. With the arrival of a woman named Elisa who is interested in his manuscripts, he finds the opportunity of one more conquest irresistible.
Based on an operatic play featuring Mozart pieces, John Malkovich plays himself playing Casanova inside and outside the period narrative.
