In Jason Sotolongo’s short film, Double Agent, a man (David Rountree), trapped and tied up in the back of a truck rigged to explode, tries to remember how he got into this predicament, and how to get out.
With all the moments you would expect in an action film, the short paints an uncommon narrative with familiar tools. As the man pieces together the severity of his situation, we too are caught up in the suspense of it all. The mystery could lead the film in any number of directions.
For example, if the short decided it wanted to be a parody of secret agent action films, it easily could’ve done so. Likewise, it could’ve just been a straightforward action film and that would’ve worked too. Instead, it tried something more thought-provoking.
I don’t want to say too much more, for the short is only seven minutes long and, since it is based on action films, any developments as far as story are concerned, beyond the basic premise, can give it away pretty easily. The film would’ve been fine as just a competent action film, but it tried for something more, and it succeeds in elevating the narrative into something fresher.
