IT’S LIKE THAT

By Bob Westal | January 29, 2005

This short from Australia’s SLAG (Southern Ladies Animation Group) takes real recordings of refugee children held in detention and puts them in the mouths of animated birds. The film mixes exquisite three-dimensional puppet animation with more experimental hand-drawn depictions.

Obviously, we’re a long way from Aardman’s “Creature Comforts” here, but the film’s slow pacing and excessive experimentalism obscures the poignant subject matter. A simpler, clearer approach might have yielded better results.
