My Hero

When I read the description of writer-director Joshua Joel Ortiz’s short film, My Hero, I couldn’t help but think, “Yep. I’ve been there.”

Spooderman (Tyler Picchi) and Gamora (Monica Joelle Ortiz) are getting dressed by their car for what should be a newbie’s first Comic-Con. The fun ends when Smart Bully (Andes Erickson) and Bully Bully (Austin V) sneak up from behind, humiliating the strangers on an Instagram Live. Our lovebirds are their latest victim. Once they’re back in the car, Gamora wishes that Spooderman had said something. Stung by that, Spooderman takes matters into his own hands.

“…getting dressed by their car for what should be a newbie’s first Comic-Con. The fun ends when Smart Bully and Bully Bully sneak up…”

Running at a brisk two and a half minutes, My Hero gets right to the point in the most efficient manner possible. But as I said up front, many of us have been in this situation, and the story here does exactly what it needs to do: give us that moment when we actually did something. Let’s be real: we’d probably regret taking any action in the long run… or not. Screw these guys.

My Hero. Short film, short review. I had fun and felt a bit of vindication.
