For a sensory trip back to a time when the bookshelves in grocery stores were lined with dead children, sit down in front of the promising slasher film House Sitter, directed by Chris Leto and written by Beux Leto. Kayla (Jenna Forcier) is out of school and can’t find a full-time job. She takes a quick housesitting gig for high roller Harold Finch (David Varrieur), who needs to go on a business trip, though what business Kayla is not sure. Kind Mr. Finch gives the okay for Kayla to have a couple of friends over, as he is leaving enough pizza money.

Kayla heads out to the comic book shop that her bestie, Dani (Cristina Mendez), works at. They have known each other since 8, but Kayla doesn’t share Dani’s obsession with horror movies or comic books. Dani isn’t pleased that Kayla has also invited over her boyfriend, Blake (Evan Eiglarish), as she thinks he is a complete dick.

“Once he arrives, before he can get to the door, the pizza guy is viciously stabbed to death by a figure in a mask.”

While sitting at the house, Blake is doing his influencer thing and makes videos of himself strutting around Mr. Finch’s place like a baller. The pizza guy (Adam Shipley), who is delivering the pizza to the Finch place, is one of Blake’s subscribers, but has no idea he is about to deliver this pizza to Blake himself. Once he arrives, before he can get to the door, the pizza guy is viciously stabbed to death by a figure in a mask. It is starting to get dark…

House Sitter is not one of the greatest slasher films ever made. It isn’t even one of the better slashers. However, House Sitter is a decent enough slasher with a couple of good moves. A slasher movie on this quality level is worth more to me than another hall-of-fame for the sub-genre, if you want the truth to be told. I came up in an era that was flooded with slashers, both onscreen and in print. The movies had a new low-budget stalk-and-kill picture every week, all of which made money back then. The supermarket bookshelves, when they sold a lot of books in supermarkets, were filled with books with black covers and dead children. Such as a little girl with a lollipop and a skull for a face. It was a time of endless forests of horror covering America, up until the time they were all cut down to make room for spy novels.
