In the short film by Chris & Miles, Silk, a lonely woman, Anya (Ava Gong), finds herself captivated by a late-night infomercial hosted by a spokesperson named Wendy (Paige Larkowski), who promises a revolutionary “24-hour solution” that will change her life forever. Intrigued by Wendy’s message of purpose and self-fulfillment—“your desires will exist under your skin, like silk”—Anya becomes drawn to the idea.

In the meantime, she calls an old flame, Ryan (Adam Rac), hoping to rekindle a connection, but he is put off by her constant calling, accusing her of obsession and telling her to move on. Humiliated and desperate, Anya turns back to the glowing screen and Wendy’s soothing invitation: “Call us now.” Soon, a mysterious box arrives at Anya’s door. Inside is a strange object with instructions promising to bring true happiness. All she has to do is “insert” it between her legs. As Anya does, her body begins to change in disturbing and unnatural ways.

Filmmakers Chris & Miles have mastered the art of creepiness in just 12 minutes. It all starts with Anya, who is obsessed with Ryan, believing that, despite his every denial, he loves her. The void in her life leads her to insert an alien artifact inside her to fill that emptiness. Creepy, creepy, creepy.

Film has a way of evoking emotions along with feelings you can almost touch. Silk takes us on a strange and visceral journey. Chris & Miles show that it doesn’t take much to make a late ’70s–period short—it’s mostly the clothes. Add some camera filters and a scary sound design, and you have a quick short that stays with you for a long time… and lives inside you… like Silk.
