For an excellent scenic tour directly to the black heart of Eerietown, hop aboard the impressive indie horror thriller Inthralled, directed by Douglas Bankston with a screenplay by Bankston and Kate Siegenthaler from her original story. It opens inside a creepy hospital on a stormy night, where a blond girl (Lily Workman) is lying on a gurney. She holds in her hands an old, sinister-looking book with unknown binding, while blood drips onto the floor as she sings a lullaby.

Thirty years later, Emily (Alanna Hamill Newton) is moving back to the small town in Arkansas she grew up in, bringing along her pregnant daughter Annalisa (Annie Sullivan). Emily is seeking a change of scenery, as she just lost her husband Robert (Jim Long), while Annalisa’s fiancé died in a car accident while relapsing on drugs. Soon after moving into her mother’s old house, Emily starts hearing her late husband’s voice calling her, with shadows appearing on the walls and a pair of her husband’s boots showing up with fresh muddy footprints.

Annalisa goes to look for books about ghosts in the local used bookstore run by Dillon (Brad Adams), who is easy on the eyes. While in the paranormal section, she runs into the Reverend (Kelcey Watson), which is always an embarrassing occult faux pas. She talks about it over coffee with Dillon, who thinks he may have a book that can help. He offers a tome that covers the supernatural in general, but Annalisa finds an even better book back in the stacks: an old, sinister-looking book with an unknown binding.

One of the most important films of the Hollywood Golden Age was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, as it not only featured Frankenstein, but also Dracula, the Wolf Man, and, in a cameo, the Invisible Man. In a more refined manner, Inthralled follows a similar approach to setting up a genius triple-cheeseburger treatment of the horror concept. At first, we are presented with what seems like a ghost story with a heavy lean on drama.

    Newton’s portrayal of Emily is nothing short of phenomenal, a portrait of a mother armored in sorrow yet fraying at the edges, her every gesture radiating raw, unspoken pain.
