Written and directed by Vito Trupiano, Hellbent on Boogie is an indie drama exploring the strength of family ties and the pursuit of dreams. With grounded performances set against a small-town backdrop, the film manages to balance grit with deeply felt emotion.
Alan (Shiloh Fernandez) returns home after being down on his luck, hoping to get back on his feet. Like a good mother, Simona (Doreen Llerena) lets him stay under her roof as long as he helps out at the church, while he tries to find a regular job. At home, Alan is saddened by the way Simona and his autistic sister Quinn (Alyx Ruibal) get along. Simona is more controlling than ever, keeping Quinn on a tight routine and homeschooling her.
Meanwhile, Quinn is excited that Alan is home again. Quinn shares with Alan her dream of trying out for the American Dance Challenge. She has been practicing, but because the tryouts are across the state, Quinn knows Simona will not allow her to go. Alan is now determined more than ever that Quinn needs to fulfill her dreams and experience the world outside her home.
These troubles stem from the reason he left home in the first place. With people trying to track him down, Alan has only a short time to prove himself and give Quinn the life she deserves before his past catches up with him.
“Alan has only a short time to prove himself and give Quinn the life she deserves before his past catches up with him.”
Hellbent on Boogie boils down to the strong performances of Shiloh Fernandez and Alyx Ruibal as Alan and Quinn. Both characters are incredibly sympathetic, and their chemistry as brother and sister is magic, reflecting a love that’s truly genuine. Alan is willing to do anything for his little sister…to a fault. No matter what Alan does (right or wrong), you know he’s doing it for the right reasons. Supporting these performances is a solid script and direction from Vito Trupiano, who pieced together a heartwarming indie drama.
The tone of the film is well-suited to its indie roots. It’s really about giving each character a clear definition and a strong story motivation. It takes place in a small town, where some characters love and thrive, while others, like Alan, seek a break to escape. It’s about as close as you’ll get to a gritty, feel-good movie.
Hellbent on Boogie stands out with its foundation of love, sacrifice, and resilience. It’s a touching tale that reminds us to keep fighting for one another.
