HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2025 REVIEW! Written and directed by The Ambrogio Twins, Even Witches Have Bad Luck Sometimes stars Liana Liberato as a young lady who is not having the best day. For starters, she overslept and now has to rush to get ready for a big job interview. But her mom calls right as she’s donning her eye makeup. Despite attempts to end the call, Mom just cannot take a hint. Once on the road, her card is declined at the coffeehouse. What else can go wrong for the witch-dressed woman? Will she arrive at the interview on time?

“…a young lady who is not having the best day.”

Even Witches Have Bad Luck Sometimes is a darkly comedic piece. The punchlines come at the expense of the main character, but she’s never ridiculed. It is a delicate balance to pull off such writing successfully. The Ambrogio Twins handle the tone with precision, allowing just the right amount of tension, drama, and comedy to enter the story, making it all work. The ending is a perfect summation of all that the lead had gone through.

Even Witches Have Bad Luck Sometimes is a terrific, though dark, time. Liberato gives a remarkable performance, devoid of any pretense, as she’s not afraid of looking pushy, rude, needy, or crazy on screen. This is not to be missed, and at less than 10 minutes long, the short is the perfect small respite from a busy day.
