The Death Ox

By Hannah Cronk | June 12, 2025

Directed by Serkan Aktaş, The Death Ox throws you straight into the heart of a slaughterhouse with nothing to soften the blow. You won’t find music here, just the scrape of metal on flesh, the wet echo of bones meeting blade, and the laboured breathing of the animal on the table. The camera stays close to every twitch and drip, insisting you look at what we normally look away from. Those moments feel urgent and alive even as they capture a life ending.

In its one minute, The Death Ox shows life and death in a brutal dance under Mozart’s Requiem. Serkan Aktaş holds on to each bloody moment in clear close-ups, the music making the horror feel even heavier.

“…life and death in a brutal dance under Mozart’s Requiem…”

Visually, the film is spare but intense. Tight close-ups of muscle and bone fill the frame, so there is no escape from what is happening. The colour of blood against pale skin is almost poetic until you remember where you are. Every scrape of metal on flesh and the wet echo of bones meeting blade carries the weight of that score.

At its core, The Death Ox is an invitation to ask questions about life and the choices we make. We eat meat every day, but understand little about what it costs another living creature. By making us bear witness, it forces us to face that gap.

This short is not easy to sit through, but it rewards you with a clear look at mortality and consequence. It holds nothing back and trusts its audience to stay present.
