HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! Space Ryder is a science fiction actioner written by Vivian Yoon and directed by Jeff Sloniker. Conner Bean stars as intergalactic bounty hunter Ryder, who is telling the story of his latest acquisition to a bartender (Cory Jacob). Trouble traveling in space, encounters on a deadly planet, and a monster are all in store for the intrepid hero. How did he make it out in one piece in the face of such trials?
“Trouble traveling in space, encounters on a deadly planet, and a monster are all in store…”
At about 13 minutes long, the film is concise but tons of fun. The production design is impeccable. The spaceship is tangible and stylish. The props are a fun throwback design to the heyday of the golden age of sci-fi films. Most importantly, there’s a great mix of practical and computer effects throughout. The monster looks great and the mix between effects only enhances its cool design.
Space Ryder is a visual treat. Bean’s portrayal of Ryder is effortlessly cool, and the story ends in a surprising way. The effects and production design, which are truly top-notch, are a testament to the team’s dedication. Sloniker’s direction keeps the pace and intrigue high.
Space Ryder screened at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival.
