When we were kids, we were always so fascinated about becoming adults – probably because we get to earn our own money or have freedom to do what we want to do. However, what we didn’t know is that when we grow up, we also get caught up with life, grow apart with our siblings (who would’ve thought, right?), and spend less time with our family. That’s the harsh reality of life, but we can do something to reconnect with our loved ones with something as simple as regular movie nights during weekend.
If you’re looking for the best movies based on real life to watch with your family, no problem! We, too, are a fan of real life movies, and we’re here to share our best picks. Most of these movies can be watched on various streaming platforms, like Netflix, Hulu, Dish TV, and many more, so you won’t have a hard time looking for them.
Society of the Snow (2023)
Society of the Snow is a true story about a Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashes in the Andes mountains and becomes stranded in the snow for 72 days. Now, they have to fight for their lives with almost nothing to eat and no help in sight. The Andes mountains are known to have a super harsh environment that makes it hard to survive – thin air, unpredictable, extreme cold. So, how did the team make it? Or… did they? We don’t want to spoil this one heck of a movie for you.
You can stream this movie on Netflix, but before you do that, you have to keep in mind that you need to have a fast internet connection like the one from HughesNet for a smooth and uninterrupted streaming.
Moneyball (2011)
Ever heard of the famous Billy Beane? Moneyball is an adaptation of the book The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. It’s about Billy, the general market manager of a small-market baseball team. Since he don’t have the money to get superstar players, he had to get creative and use statistics and data analysis to find undervalued players who have the skills and actually win games. This movie will literally show you how thinking outside the box can make a whole difference.
Apollo 13 (1995)
This one’s a classic. This movie isn’t about the happy moon landing, though. It’s all about what went wrong on Apollo 13. They’re millions of miles from home with barely anything left. This true story shows how brave they were and how the genius team back on Earth helped get them back safe. It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, but it’s also uplifting.
Since this is an old movie, you can find it on different streaming platforms. It may even air on cable/satellite and Spanish TV occasionally. But if you want to watch it ASAP, it should be on most streaming services.
Black Hawk Down (2001)
It’s about the war mission that went sideways in Somalia. The helicopter containing a team of soldiers got shot down. Thankfully, they’re alive, but now… they’re trapped in a rough part of town where they must fight for their lives against enemies or die. This movie can get pretty intense, but it gives us a glimpse of what really happens to our soldiers during war.
NYAD (2023)
If you and your family love underdog stories, NYAD is definitely one for the books. It’s about Diana Nyad, a world-class swimmer who attempts a seemingly impossible mission of swimming from Cuba to Florida at the age of 60. Mind you, that’s over 100 miles of open water that she needs to cover – strong currents, lethal jellyfish stings, freezing salt water, and more. It’s definitely a film that will inspire you to achieve your goals, whatever it is, no matter your age.
The Bottom Line
Watching movies based on real life allows us to know how strong, complex, determined, and powerful humans can be. So the next movie night, make sure to include these films in your lineup so you and your family can reflect on these great stories. Have fun!
