Ten international short films will screen at the debut fest on August 12-14, 2022
A week after revealing its feature and seminar slate, the non-profit Vashon Film Institute (VFI) announced the shorts slate for its inaugural Vashon Island Film Festival (VIFF), August 12-14, 2022. VIFF will screen ten shorts from six countries—eight narratives and two documentaries—that have recently distinguished themselves on the festival circuit alongside its feature slate. The Festival also includes an Opening Night Gala, Saturday Night Soiree, and two seminars delivered by notable film industry guests.
“We’re delighted to bring this shorts program to the inaugural Vashon Island Film Festival,” says Vashon Film Institute founder and island resident Mark Mathias Sayre. “We scoured the festival and the wider filmmaking community to find the widest variety of excellent films. Like the short story, short films present unique challenges to filmmakers, combining economy of expression and strong, innovative storytelling. We’re grateful for the opportunity to showcase these ten filmmakers’ work.”

The Festival has also announced the jury for the 2022 Festival, who will all be tasked with honoring the Quartermaster Award, which honors excellence in feature filmmaking, and the Burton Award, which honors excellence in short filmmaking, as VIFF’s Red Bicycle Awards. In addition, there will also be audience awards. The jury comprises:

Janet Felicity Welt, Event Manager of the Night Light Drive-In on Vashon Island
“Our Jury has their work cut out for them, and they’re busy watching the selections now,” says Sayre. “They’re tasked with choosing what we think is the best of what we think is among the finest showcases of festival honorees and favorites assembled for area film buffs.”
All screenings are slated to take place in person. The narrative shorts include:
2002 (Year of the Horse) [Norway]
Directed by Mathias Nordli Eriksen and Matias Rygh, the cast comprises Jakob Lasse Fengen, Hannah Fiedbraaten, Henrik Mestad, Marian Saastad Ottersen, and Margit Hellum. Teenagers Ingrid and Noah declare their love for each other in her bedroom. But, downstairs, her parents are splitting up. A comedy classic in the making, this dysfunctional family affair views the implosion of a longtime marriage from the perspective of first love.
