Now, there’s a rumor that you’re dead. There are all these posters everywhere declaring your death. Clearly you’re here in the flesh and you have this, it’s a mockumentary film, right? Tell us about it.
It’s something that I kind of wrote out of a depression about the Wiezel being over, but I didn’t want to make a movie about anything sad, you know what I mean? Cause you can watch VH-1 for that and I wanted to make a comedy about the fact that I had a great run and now I’m moving on to the next stuff all within a movie and it’s called “You’ll Never Wiez in this Town Again,” and it’s basically about me faking my death to become famous again. Carrot Top moves into my house, you know, so my life is really in the toilet.
You’ve also got all these different cameos like Sean Penn’s in it… Whoopie Goldberg…It just shows you the range of people that are in the movie. That’s what I love so much about it. You think a guy is like a Carrot Top or a Pauly Shore, but then you get guys like Stiller and Penn and Whoopie and all these other people and to put them all in a movie together shows you that we all have a sense of humor about whatever level that we’re at and that’s what’s great about the movie. I don’t think you’ll ever see another movie with Screech and then like…Ellen DeGeneres.
Do you think that’s the secret to your success? I mean, you’ve got a sense of humor about yourself.
Yeah, you’ve got to have one, especially when you come up with something so big like I came up with over 10 years ago – the Wiezel – and that whole time was like – Ahhh!!! It was so big, you know, anything like that is going to end at some point. I know the fans don’t want it to end, but you know, I got to move on, you know what I mean? I’d love to do a cartoon, “The Wiezel”, and kind of keep the Wiezel alive at that level, but as far as me personally, you know, I want to be able to look back on my career and say, I’ve done a whole bunch of stuff, not just that. And this movie is, in a way, kind of saying goodbye to the Wiezel and educating the fans that there’s more to me than that and then also turning people on to me that never even liked me before.
So, you directed the film as well?
Yeah, I directed it, too.
What was that experience like? I mean, did you get in arguments with yourself in the movie or what?
No. I directed all my MTV specials when I was on MTV, but the thing that was really hard was scheduling my day as far as figuring out what scenes to shoot.
Is it fair to say you’ve had a love/hate relationship with the media? Some people in the media just don’t get you.
Yeah.
Is that it? They don’t get your sense of humor?
I don’t know what it is. I can’t explain it. I really can’t explain it. But I think that they’re going to like this movie, cuz I’m making fun of myself a lot, so…All you critics out there that are going to check this out, I think you’re going to really love the fact that I kick myself in the a*s. You guys are going to love that.
