Magical Realism as a genre takes many strange turns. For example, there’s A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, which considers an anecdote about an Angel who crash lands on Earth. The Troll Bridge ponders what would happen if there actually was a troll under a bridge in Central Park. Now we have Brian Barnes and Matthew Merenda’s Yellow. The short film is a riff off Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. But, unlike that classic, we never actually learn the name of the transformed person.
“…what would happen if someone randomly transformed into a rubber duck?”
Yellow seeks to answer an age-old question: what would happen if someone randomly transformed into a rubber duck? The comedy that follows is both whimsical and hilariously tragic in its ennui. After all, as a rubber duck, you would never leave the room your new owner would place you. Also, as a rubber duck, you would be aware of all the scents and noises of the bathroom, with all the comedic and horror implications thereof. Also, you would have ample time to digress and let your imagination run absolutely bonkers.
Such is the case with the second half of Yellow. The co-writers/co-directors make no real false moves as they amp up the absurdity of the situation. I found this film to be a madcap delight. Seek it out. It will only take 12 minutes of your time. Truly wild magically realistic contemplation ensues.
