It’s interesting… actually, a little weird… how we become a bit more insightful about life and living when faced with death. Brian Scott Steele’s short film, In the Event of My Death, is the story of Sam (Steve Nagle) trying to fulfill the final wish of his recently deceased friend, Jeremy (Jacob Layne Miller).
While attending the post-funeral reception at Jeremy’s home, Sam decides to snoop through his former bandmate’s room, only to discover a secret file on Jeremy’s laptop, but that’s not important. What Sam does find is the final video testament of Jeremy, who made it for him.
“…had time to ponder the significance of life just before sending Sam on an important treasure hunt…”
In it, Jeremy had time to ponder the significance of life just before sending Sam on an important treasure hunt that will take him to significant moments in their friendship. The first being an arcade, where Sam has to win 9,999 tickets to purchase a ship in a bottle that the two tried to win as children. It’s here that Jeremy’s sister, Mandy (Erin Ragland), joins the hunt as she received a similar message from her dead brother.
In the Event of My Death is a light and sweet comedy about life and friendship and is ideally suited for the short film format. I appreciate the characters created by writer/director Steele. Nagle plays Sam as a somewhat quiet introvert which sets him against Ragland’s more outgoing Mandy nicely. Miller has the hard job of appearing alone and only in vlog form, yet he shifts perfectly from light silliness to light seriousness.
In the Event of My Death has a simple but effective point about the value of friendship and the importance of making the most of this life.
"…a light and sweet comedy about life and friendship..."
Sounds like a fun movie that could give valuable perspective in these days! Can’t wait to see it via film festivals!
