The Video Association of Dallas is back at the Angelika Film Center and screening in their medium of choice – video – with the next feature in the Texas Filmmaker’s Series, “cicadas” by Kat Candler. The Austin-based filmmaker has won acclaim for her shorts “The Bathroom,” “Avenue K,” and “Trophies” at festivals all over the states and the Rochester International Film Festival. Candler was also awarded the 2001 Women in Motion Award from Emerson College for the pioneering advancement of women filmmakers. She produces work both collaboratively (“The Absence of Wings” with Six in Austin) and independently.
Kat Candler’s “cicadas,” was first screened in Dallas at the 14th Annual Dallas Video Festival and is her first digital video feature project. It tells the story of three kids who have had to take on the roles of surrogate parents, confessors, mentors and nursemaids as they deal with the unfortunately common problems of childhood and teenage-life. Candler’s portrait of young lives evolves into a stark and sometimes brutal look at the cruelties that kids and teenagers have to survive. Both the film and the kids endure in the surprising gentle story that tracks Anna (Lindsay Broockman), her brothers and her friends through their day-to-day.
