Twenty-one documentaries have been selected for the Sixth Annual “DOCtober in September” Showcase. Six short films and 15 features will be shown on two screens at the Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex Theatre in Santa Monica from September 13-19.
“DOCtober in September provides a venue for filmmakers to qualify for an Academy Award,” says IDA Executive Director Sandra Ruch. “The rules require films to be exhibited on theatrical screens for paid admissions in either Los Angeles County or Manhattan for at least seven consecutive days. During the first five years, nine films featured at DOCtober were nominated for Academy Awards, and two of them, “The Last Days” and “The Personals”, took home Oscars.”
The films will play in a rotation so that each day of the week each documentary is in a different time slots. Filmmakers will be present at selected screenings for discussions. DOCtober makes its move to September this year due to a change in entry dates for Oscar consideration.
DOCtober in September includes the U.S. premiere of “Lost in La Mancha”, a behind-the-scenes look at the “unmaking of” Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”— a film with a $32 million dollar budget that disintegrated. The documentary, narrated by Jeff Bridges, takes an in-depth look at the harsh realities of filmmaking with drama ranging from personal to epic conflicts.
