Jim Jarmusch has inspired indie filmmakers for decades now, and his films, including “Night on Earth,” “Stranger Than Paradise” and “Mystery Train” are practically required viewing for any serious student, or lover, of modern film. Jarmusch will be on hand next week (day and time TBA shortly) for a special screening of some of his favorite short films at Austin’s Cinematexas Festival, which runs from [ October 16th through the 24th. ]
Attendees can expect to see some very original, and rare, film, including “P.M.” a banned Cuban film from 1962 directed by Orlando Jiminez Leal and Saba Cabrera. The film is described as “a short hallucinatory trip in gritty, lyrical black and white through the degenerate nightlife of Havana, photographed just a few years after the revolution.” Also screening is 1931’s “Bimbo’s Initiation,” directed by Max Fleischer. “An exquisite example of American animated surrealism…one wonders what sorts of drugs the Fleischer brothers were under the influence of.”
