There are good reasons why I don’t like watching trailers. Spoilers is one, but the other is its obvious attempt to sell me a movie I don’t want to see. Unfortunately, the trailers for Ang Lee’s Gemini Man does little justice for the actual film. Don’t get me wrong. Gemini Man is not a great film, but it is a good one (believe it or not). I had time to kill and Gemini Man was my only option, and based on the trailers, my expectations were low.
Let’s start by saying that if you are ever hired to be an assassin for the U.S. Government (or any government for that matter), don’t ever expect to retire, nor live a long life. Will Smith is his Will-Smithyist as government assassin Henry Brogan. Always under the assumption that each kill is ordered for the right reasons, Brogan finds out his last hit was for deep state cover-up reasons; meaning his target was innocent. Now Brogan has to be eliminated after uncovering that fact.
“…how do you kill the best assassin…with the clone of that assassin…”
But how do you kill the best assassin? No spoilers here (cuz it’s in the trailer), but with the clone of that assassin, which is precisely what happens. Again, no spoilers, but Brogan now has to deal with his clone, expose the cover-up, and hopefully retire for good. Still, it’s all in the trailer and to be honest. It’s good that they did because instead of Gemini Man being a silly movie about Will Smith clones killing each other, we somehow manage to make a movie about Will Smith clones much more seriously.
Brogan is aided by surveillance agent Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who…of course…did not know who she was surveilling, nor his reputation. Now much be taken out as well. Then there’s another former assassin, Baron (Benedict Wong), playing this Asian Jimmy Buffet…and conveniently is the best pilot in the world. Finally, the big bad, Clay Verris (Clive Owen), who masterminded the clone program.
