This October, the first annual SinCine Erotic Film Fest will take place in Manhattan. The festival will show its racy films Thursdays all throughout the month at various locations downtown, with the bulk of the action taking place at the newly-opened video-themed bar Remote Lounge in the East Village.
“There is a rich, well-groomed glut of film festivals in the New York City area ranging from children’s flicks to documentaries to movies about bikes… however, there was an obvious void that needed filling,” said festival co-founder Matt “Beheindler” Heindl. “There are artists who specialize in ‘erotic’ art and film – they were being shut out of most of the festivals. We now offer them a competitive forum in which to show their pieces.”
So, if you have a film that’s been turned down at “the other guys” for being too racy, submit your film to SinCine, they will be accepting films up till the beginning of September. But mind you…try not to send in blatant porn.
“Will SinCine screen ‘porn’? Not exactly… however, there will be a high degree of adult content and surely a lot of skin – one of the reasons we chose to screen at a bar – no one gets in who is under 21,” said Heindl. “’Porn’ is a very subjective thing anyway – one person’s money shot is another person’s yawner. There have been Calvin Klein ads that conservatives deem as ‘porn’ while J-Lo’s see-through outfits and Buffy’s highly-suggestive content have been strewn over every major TV network. There will always be a gray area.”
SinCine Erotic Film Fest 2002 will screen documentary/feature, short and the experimental/animation categories this year, awarding prizes and honors to each category’s winners. Films will be judged by a top-secret panel of judges, whose identities will be revealed after the festival’s completion.
“We hope to give special awards for the gay and lesbian categories as well as special honors going toward the audiences’ favorites,” said Melissa Ulto, festival co-founder. “Many of these films will be shot by serious artists and filmmakers… however, we want to have a light-hearted, safe and fun environment at our screenings.”
