Bring your Yamulka and report to Temple! Film Threat received the following information about the latest, and surely not the last, “Dance” film festival to make its debut in Park City. We’ll pass along more details when we get them, for now, here’s the official press release:
SchmoozeDance 2001 will coincide with the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2001. ^ Â It will celebrate Jewish films and filmmakers at the weeklong Sundance, Slamdance, Digidance, and NoDance film festivals in Park City, Utah. Â SchmoozeDance is being produced by JewishFilm.com, the online Jewish Film Archive. Among the films of Jewish interest that will premiere in the festivals are “Trembling Before G-d”, a highly anticipated documentary about gay and lesbian Orthodox and Hasidic Jews by Sandi Simcha Dubowski; and “Brooklyn Babylon”, a feature film by past Sundance winner, Marc Levin, about the love affair between a black rapper and a Jewish woman. Â JewishFilm.com and its editor Larry Mark will host the SchmoozeDance events at Temple Har Shalom, Park City’s synagogue, which is located adjacent to the festival’s main venues. The Sundance Film Festival festival will open with Christine Lahti’s (Lieberman in Love) new feature, “My First Mister”, a love story that stars Albert Brooks, Carole Kane, and Leelee Sobieski. Â The festival will also premiere a documentary about Ralph Bunche, the mediator of the 1949 Arab Israeli Armistice; “Divided We Fall”, a Czech film set in a small Czechoslovakian town in 1943, about a family that harbors a Jewish escapee from the Theresiendstadt concentration camp; and “Haiku Tunnel”, directed by Jacob and Josh Kornbluth. JewishFilm.com is a website dedicated to promoting independent Jewish films. Â The archive currently lists over 800 films and videos of Jewish interest. The Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford, is recognized internationally as a showcase for the best in new American independent film. Â Over 160 films are screened and 20,000 film industry professionals are expected to attend. Â In past years, The Sundance Film Festival has premiered significant films that were then acquired for Jewish film festivals around the world, including Paragraph 175; Train of Life; Regret To Inform; Judy Berlin; A Walk on The Moon; A Letter Without Words; Moment of Impact; Pi; A Price Above Rubies; The Long Way Home; Safe Men; I Love You…Don’t Touch Me; and Blacks and Jews.
