Originally, the Meek were supposed to sign for it, but they didn't show, curiously enough...
It beats the hell out of the fruit basket we were originally promised...

Look, I dunno about you, but I don't want the world run by a bunch of guys running around biting the heads off chickens.
'Cuz that's what geeks do, y'know.

Not to be the "trekker" amongst all the "trekkies" online, but the whole geek chic thing is way out of hand. It's one of the reasons movies suck now, by the way.
"Hey, are we going to put out 'Run Ronnie Run' this year?"
"Are you kidding? That's such a geek movie. All those dorks with computers already downloaded it anyway. Let's just dump it onto DVD."
"Good idea. Let's put out 'The Real Cancun' instead."
Just sick of rubbing bad movies on my gums, is all.

Almost forgot. Great column, by the way, albeit a bit short. I'll take Kaufman over any "respected" filmmaker any day. And I look for guys like Mike Mendez and Eli Roth to cause some major upsets in the coming years. "Who's the next Carpenter, Raimi, Romero?" Nowhere. The filmmakers doing the really killer stuff right now are completely independent beings, and I salute them. And stuff.

hey mike if you hammer tent peggs into the ground you are old at least your tent is, but i need some clarification on few things here, like are you or have you ever been a minuteman?second, what was the point of the column 'i like the good old days'?
seems to me that some of the old school indie folks rule the hollywood , ever hear of a guy named sam raymi, or this other guy peter jackson. is that the inheritence your talking about? there was just as much main stream crap then as now, and there is alotta great indie stuff out there now. i'm in toronto and the fest is in full swing. i could name half a dozen great productions, that i was involved with. do you really think and young people don't have a clue? there are plenty of smart, sophisticated kids out their, the problem is with older people being affraid of change. "Think you can get a good discussion about Francois Truffault’s mastery of mise-en-scene out of them? I can see it now: " maybe you should write about truffault

While I don't agree with you about the Shining and will meet you halfway on Heat, I still sympathize with you.
My latest headscratcher has been Minority Report. Most geeks and the two critics who matter to me the most hailed it as Spielberg's best since Raiders. I saw a shoddily crafted trainwreck of a movie. Oh, and I thought T2 was lame. Try saying that in a room full of nerds.

Mike, I completely sympathize. While I liked The Shining more than you, I too have an opinion that gets me strange looks whenever I voice it:
I loved Jaws the Revenge (a.k.a The Shark that Roared). Absolutely loved it. The shark swims to the Bahamas to get revenge on the son of Sheriff Brody. It was a crappy little flick that ended with the shark being rammed by a huge sailboat, at which point the fish ROARS in pain. Too goddamn much.
Of course, I'm one of only two people I know who laughed at the "Kafka" line in Spaceballs.

Nope. Wrong Mike Watt
[QUOTE]second, what was the point of the column 'i like the good old days'?
What's been the point of any of my columns so far? I had fun writing them, though.
[QUOTE]seems to me that some of the old school indie folks rule the hollywood , ever hear of a guy named sam raymi, or this other guy peter jackson. is that the inheritence your talking about?
Nope - heard of Sam RAIMI though :) (hey, you nitpicked me first!)
[QUOTE] there was just as much main stream crap then as now, and there is alotta great indie stuff out there now. i'm in toronto and the fest is in full swing. i could name half a dozen great productions, that i was involved with.
I could name you another dozen I'm aware of myself.
[QUOTE] do you really think and young people don't have a clue?
No, just the ones I was writing about.
[QUOTE][i] there are plenty of smart, sophisticated kids out their, the problem is with older people being affraid of change. "Think you can get a good discussion about Francois Truffault’s mastery of mise-en-scene out of them? I can see it now: " maybe you should write about truffault
There's nothing I could say about Truffault that hasn't already been written by better writers. I wrote the column after a few weeks worth of exposure to a number of high school Blockbuster zombies over a year ago. That's what was on my mind at the time I wrote it. I'm not sure why you took it so personally, but if I can reach just one person with these tiny missives, then my job is done and I can go to my grave with a happy tear in my eye. :)

Guys, thanks for the sympathy and the support. I was expecting to be burned in effigy for this one, actually. THE SHINING seems to be a sacred cow amongst the geeks circle I hang in.
Much sympathy and support back at you for Minority Report.
As for JAWS: THE REVENGE, every movie ever made is SOMEBODY'S favorite. How can I possibly throw stones? :)

WOW!
That was quite the large amount of fanboy shit!
Thats Ok, I wasnt expecting anything credible from someone who has the filmmaking skill of david the rock nelson high on crack amidst a full blown epileptic seizure.
Weregrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrllllll
sucks, I want my money back, And I wanna smack that creature that you treat like a director for wasting that portion of my life which I will never see again.
Seriously man, im sick of pretentious fanboys making god awful movies.
P.S. Who cares what chicks you think are hot? Why should we care what you think at all, honestly?
Im sick of bullshit, im gonna go light my face on fire.

Okay, thank you for your input. Such as it was. You might have had the decency to actually post your name so we might actually converse like civilized human beings, but that was entertaining in its own right. When, might I ask, did you get the chance to check WERE-GRRL out?
I wouldn't mind checking out your movie sometime, if one exists. I tend to deal out criticism a tad less harshly.

Cheer up fanboy internet goons, its the internet, a device made for downloading porn and random anonymous shit talking.
Getting mad at anything on the internet is like walking into a public bathroom and seeing fuck you written on the wall and going, "What? Fuck Me!? How dare he!"
Go suck an egg.

So, in your esteemed opinion the net exists to provide an acceptable forum for sub-normal 16 year old boys on their mother's AOL accounts to indulge in a false sense of anonymity and cruise bulletin board's flaming strangers? Who'd a thunk it?

Well, I'm certainly feeling enlightened.
(Just think, it only took a month for the FT Forums to attract its first semi-literate, insecure, foul-mouthed, unwelcome stranger with nothing better to do than come along and attempt to insult people. )
I wasn't mad, by the way. I thought that was pretty clear.
Thanks for your input, though, Badger. Drop me a line about your movies anytime!

I'm doing research for a Canadian Independent documentary about what I call Geek Culture. Basically it's about people who are superfans of things from obscure movies to comic books and how they're becoming more important to pop culture.
I'd like to hear from anyone who considers themselves a film geek, sci-fi geek, comic book geek, or any kind of geek, barring sideshow geeks, this ain't that kind of doc.
I've put up a CALLING ALL GEEKS thread up at Indie Threat for your input, or you could e-mail me at:
screenanon@yahoo.ca
Any input will be very very welcome.
