I made the mistake of seeing "Paycheck" a few days ago, Ben Affleck and John Woo's latest.
The first half was great, I was really getting into it. Then John Woo broke out the awful over-the-top action scenes he's known so well for and the whole thing just went to shit. Affleck's characer changed from an interesting, smart engineer guy to a freakin' gun wielding super agent who's pratically invincible.
The concept was great, as are most of Phillip K. Dick's concepts. But the execution was crap. This is probably one of John Woo's worst american films, well maybe not that, but it comes damn close to Broken Arrow.
I wish this would've been good. Don't see this. And if you already have...cry with me.

I haven't seen this yet, in fact I'll probably pass but I think that saying that any of Woo's American movies could possibly be worse than Windtalkers is a bit misleading. As gawdawful as Hard Target and Broken Arrow were Windtalkers was a huge steaming mass of runny crap.
And to think I still consider myself a Woo fan.

I didn't like Face/Off either. Was that Woo? I think I'm the only one who didn't like Face/Off though . . . and I also consider myself a Woo fan. How odd!
I think it's because he's on A Band Apart's list of 5-star directors.
holla!

i may have been on drugs w/o knowing when i saw this film (maybe it was a laced beverage) b/c i found myself enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would.
for the first time, i wasnt thinking "look theres ben affleck on screen." he had actually convinced me that he was someone else.
aaron eckhart was somewhat of a scene stealer. at least, i found conversations more interesting when he was participating in one.
i think John Woo needs to reconnect with his skills and talent.
maybe he ought to make a film, short or feature length, that is outside his usual genres. so it shouldnt be full on drama or action or adventure or have any guns in it...(eeek).
perhaps something Ozu Yasujiro would be proud of...a film with very little dialogue, prolonged shots, and many images of buildings and powerlines.
as a refresher or something.

Well, now he's about to make one starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. It's about gay cowboys eating pudding:

Ah, hell. Well, it was an honest mistake and that's what I get for going through a Freaky Friday/American Wedding double feature two evenings ago.

oddly enough, however, i think that John Woo could try and make a short film the way Ang Lee would (preHulk).

Haven't seen Paycheck but the trailers look like the films a rip-off of Cypher - which was a half decent film.
