i saw "Junebug" tonight because im in love with Embeth Davidtz and i thought the story was interesting (which hasnt happened in a long while).

i read Bob Westal's review of it...

and i think i wouldve responded to the film in a similar way if i didnt adore Davidtz.

there were issues of small town vs. big city; social class tensions; and why Embeth & Alessandro Nivola's characters married. cause he's good in bed?

but by the end of the film, after learning about what the characters dont know about or dont tell each other, the film became less about egocentrism and more about why Embeth & Alessandro were actually quite compatible. at the moment, i didnt need to know why they got married; i didnt need to know any more about them as individuals.

but if the director intended the film to reflect the slow-moving world of the south, i only got hints of that when he would pull an Ozu and film a tree for forty seconds.

the theatre was mostly full when i saw it & most of the audience heartily laughed at the relevant moments.

Oh, and the reason why i put this thread in Popcorn & not Hate Mail is b/c writing for Filmthreat for two years now has really helped me not only with writing out my thoughts of films but also in preparing my brain for graduate work.

my graduate school plans that i had a year ago didnt work out, but now they have, and in a much nicer setting. im taking a class called Issues in Visual Anthropology aka Ethnographic Cinema; reviewing the number of documentaries that i have has made it easier to write about non-narrative cinema.
