Star Wars III stunk and there were some things in it that messed up the whole movie series for me too. That was the worst part. The CGI was totally overdone and I don't mean that I don't appreciate cool eye candy, but it was just done in such a listless and pointless way that the CGI had all the dramatic impact of a cartoon. I could swear I was watching a souped up version of an old Super Friends cartoon until my nostalgia trip was ruined by Obi-wan riding into battle on one of the puppets from Fraggle Rock.
Samuel L Jackson was so bored that he actually fell asleep in a few of the scenes. Watch carefully, his eyes close and he starts snoring even when he's standing up. He must have done that so often they couldn't catch all of his naps in the editing room.
What happened to all the people who came up with all the powerful and sleek looking spaceships in the original trilogy? Did they have a contest to design the weirdest looking vehicle possible and instead of picking a winner they just picked all the submissions? There are going to be so many weird toys to model and make that toy companies might even have to build sweat shops outside of China or Pakistan!
The Milennium Falcon was COOL! The X-Wing fighter was COOL! Darth Vader's Tie Fighter was COOL! The Snowspeeder was COOL! The AT-AT was COOL! The Star Destroyers were COOL (and menacing). So why is it that Jedis fly around in winged go karts with pee-wee guns? That's like watching a jousting tournament held with limping donkeys.
And how about the swordplay throughout the first 2/3's of the movie? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FIGHT COREOGRAPHER FROM EPISODE 1?!?! And why did they totally ruin the coolness of the light saber by using a simple finishing move that shows the light saber to be a ridiculous weapon? There are at least three or four scenes in which the finishing move was to slide down the shaft of the saber to cut off the hands of the opponent. Duh of course that would happen if you have a sword weapon with no hilt to stop a parry from sliding right into your hands but since that didn't seem to happen all those other times, we always assumed that light sabers had different physical properties so that such an obvious blunder in choice of combat weaponry could not happen. Now I know why there are so many one handed Jedi Knights.
Oh the Jedis...the powerful and wise Jedis who appear to have this all knowing quality. They can sense emotions. They're so in tune with nature that they see nuance. They know when something's amiss and they have this omniscient quality about them as long as you don't include the times when they're about to be killed by people betraying them...yes...uh the Jedis... [cough] [cough]
There were only a few things I liked about the movie. I actually liked the way it tied up the loose ends and leads into Episode IV. In fact, I only started liking the movie at all in the last 15 minutes when you start seeing more and more things that reminded you of episode IV. Even if the actual screenwriting was awful, the story was pretty good.
