With halloween just around the corner, I'm seeing the same usual lineup on TV for the Horror genre....If you could only watch 5 "scarey" movies this season what would they be? here are mine:

1. Night of the Living Dead
2. The Shinning
3. Psycho
4. The Excocist
5. Friday the 13th

Blue's clues or Teletubbies.
;)

the aforementioned are all pretty good though I've yet to hear of The Shinning, what's that, a movie about a serial shin barker? :p

How about:
The Haunting ('63 original, thank you very much)
The Fog
The Changeling (just because I haven't seen it in a while and I remember enjoying it)
A Tale of Two Sisters (I want friends to see it while I'm still psyched on it)
Night of the Living Dead ('68 original - it's a Halloween staple, why mess with tradition?)
any old Nightstalker episodes or one of the tv movies, The Night Stalker or The Night Strangler. Does it get any better than Darren McGavin doing his Kolchak routine?
Phantasm
Evil Dead
Tales Of Terror
Asylum
Repulsion
The Others
Lets Scare Jessica to Death

Went a little over five.

What about John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN?

It's scary, it's seasonal, and it features the great Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis, the shrink who's packin' heat!

Well, it's the obvious choice and goes without saying, really. :)

Hellraiser, Fright Night, Silver Bullet, The Thing (John Carpenter's), and I agree The Changling is a great throwback.

For purely frightening images: Pink Flamingos

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" always scared the crap out of me as a kid. Both the 1956 classic version and the 1978 Philip Kaufman remake. The 1978 one kept me up many a nights after watching it on Nite Owl Theater when I was in middle school.

1. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Probably one of the top most funny, gross, insightful, intelligent and original horror movies I've ever seen. George A. Romero unfortunately is very underrated as a filmmaker and is overshadowed by crappy looking remakes of his already perfect movies.

2. Halloween (1978)
(I know, I know, it's obvious and overrated, but it fits perfectly. Forget the sequels and ripoffs, John Carpenter's 78' original is the only Michael Myers flick you need.)

3. Poltergeist (1982)
Scared the shit outta me as a young lad...nuff' said.

4. Outbreak (1995)
This is not a horror film in the traditional sense, but this thriller about an international epidemic bigger than AIDS is extremely
frightning and believable.

5. The Evil Dead (1983)
Sam Raimi's delightful mixture of The Three Stooges and demonic
possession. I love to laugh and scream at once.

Don't you remember that episode of "The Simpsons"? It was a "Treehouse of Horror" that featured a spoof of a certain Stanley Kubrick Stephen King adaptation. The spoof was called "The Shinning."

you know, I had a list of 5 in my head, BUT now that I've read everyone's input, I changed my mind. my brain is so malleable (that's a word, right?) When was the last time anyone saw Invasion of the Body Snatchers on TV? I loved that one, but I don't remember seeing it in the listings for a long time.

The Return of the Living Dead - Arguably the best zombie flick ever made

Bad Taste or Dead Alive - Splattery Peter Jackson goodness

Anything by Hershell Gordon Lewis

Basket Case, Brain Damage, or Frankenhooker - Henenlotter's three best movies

Carnival of Souls - The best horror film ever made in Kansas

Driver's Ed Movies - Always good for retro-shock value

David Cronenberg films like Dead Ringers, Scanners, or his 1985 remake of The Fly

Early Wes Craven such as The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes

...and these are just off the top of my head.

I'm just gonna add my praise for The Changeling, along with the other mentions on this thread. I recently watched a bunch of horror flicks with my girlfriend to set the tone for a short horror script we're writing, and MY GOD... after all these years (I first saw it as a kid) that movie can still just chill me to the bone. Excelent plotting, pacing and performance (of George C. Scott). That may be the movie that's frightened me more than any other. And it just keeps doing it!

I remember being really freaked by the first Evil Dead way back when, but now with the familiarity and the com-track on the DVD and everything, it's just like when you hear a song over and over again. I still love the flick, but the chill is gone.

Here's an annecdote I hope doesn't bore anyone: My college roomate and I watched Evil Deads I and II in our dorm room way back when. The Army of Darkness had just been released in theaters... theaters nowhere near us, and to compensate we watched the other two films just to get our Deadite fix. My roomate was (and, I presume, still is) about six and a half feet tall, and had the general look of someone whose ancestors spent a lot of time raiding the English seaside. He cultivated a tough-guy kind of demeanor to back up his heft, but he was actually a bright, nice guy once you got to know him. Anyway, we're watching the flick, he's on the sofa behind me, I'm blind as a bat and I sit about three inches from the TV screen on the floor, and about two-thirds of the way through Evil Dead, he flips the lights on (ya gotta watch movies with the lights out, right?) I turn around to find out what's up, and he just growls "We're watching the rest of this with the lights on... and you're not gonna say a WORD about it to anyone!"

Heh.

The recent release "The Eye" had some nice scares in it. Didn't actually add up to much in the end, but there were some nice set-peices... I liked the American Re-make of The Ring, too. Dug it more than the original, actually. There are a lot of plot holes and stuff that doesn't really add up for me, but the movie casts a good spell.

Damn, where HAVE all the good horror movies gone? Kinda drawing a blank...

If you've seen "The Changeling" with George C. Scott recently have you noticed the similarities between it and the American version of "The Ring"? Ghost of a dead kid in an old well . . . anyone?

1. Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974 - like there's any other)
2. Return Of The Living Dead
3. Evil Dead 2
4. Friday The 13th part 3 or 4
5. Dawn Of The Dead

...but I didn't think that the TXCM remake was so bad. I mean, it was CERTAINLY better than any of the original's sequels. AND there have been remakes of other films that have fared far, FAR worse treatments. AND it was better than anything Tobe Hooper did AFTER the the original. AND it was actually better than about 99% of the US horror movies that have been released in the last 5 years (although I realize that's not really saying too much). AND FINALLY, it's got R Lee Ermy who elevates just about ANY movie he appears in.

so there

Dolls was great. Much better than Puppetmaster.
Waxworks was a great movie for gorehounds. I loved it.
Don't forget Romero's non-Dead film, Martin. The not really a vampire movie. I used to think Near Dark was the best vampire movie, but Martin has to be the best vampire movie.

My five:
The Ring
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Sixth Sense
Exorcist III
Tremors

Forget what Samalyan's done recently. Sixth Sense was great no matter how bad signs, unbreakable, or the village were.

The original, Lars Von Trier, Kingdom.

Battle Royale by Kinji Fukasaku.

Tomb of the Blind Dead, new box set has been released just recently.

Zombie, which is also newly rereleased. See this for a stuntman in undead makeup fighting a shark. Fake zombie real shark.

Mr Vampire. Not just vampires and ghosts, but also some of the best Kung Fu ever filmed.

Some of these may not qualify as Halloween flicks, but they're all horror, slasher, or just plain rotten.

Irony free disturb-o-thon list :
Schramm
Der Todesking
Henry : Portrait of a Serial Killer
Nekromantik
Waterpower
Paradise Lost 1 & 2 (most disturbing character ever to appear on film)

More tongue in cheek list :
Violent Shit Trilogy
Phantom of the Paradise
Thundercrack!
A Chinese Torture Chamber Story (ok, not horror, but death by exploding penis is pretty scary)

Fuckin' Waterpower. That's a pretty rough flick.

Fuckin' Waterpower. That's a pretty rough flick.

No doubt! Jamie Gillis' magnum opus. This is one of those truely soul-scarring films. Not for amatuers. It's like a porno Taxi Driver.

The G-Man had quite a career. The Opening of Misty Beethoven (probably the best porno ever) to Waterpower (probably the worst). That's range, baby!

Speaking of scary movies, has anyone ever seen Audition? I've never heard of it before last night when they talked about it on Bravo, but it looks brutal. I'm just wondering if anyone has any opinions on it. Love it, hated it, never heard of it etc.

movies that freak the shit out of me, but aren't necessarily 'halloween'...

1. the exorcist (as a little kid i was scared of this, and i still am)
2. the hills have eyes (an enjoyable type of freak out)
3. audition (yes, it's uncomfortable, and i think most people on these boards probably like it in at least some capacity, if not love it)
4. i spit on your grave

for fun, i always love the evil dead series, and as a serious thriller (mystery, other things...i know thriller's no the right word, but it's all that i can think of right now), raimi's a simple plan is fucking great.

oddly enough, i was also freaked out recently by parts of white noise (even though the movie had some rather big problems), and the exorcism of emily rose (i think it's probably just my conviction that, even though i don't believe in the devil, i believe in evil, and possession by it is truly terrifying...)
