Just got to wondering why certain films are STILL not on DVD, sho here goes my list of the ones I'd like to see:

1. Lost Highway (David Lynch)
(and not the shitty pan and scan one we have here in Canada).

2. Naked (Mike Leigh)
3. Amateur (Hal Hartley)
4. Oleanna (David Mamet)
5. Heavenly Creatures (Peter Jackson)
(there are two out now, one is a full screen theatrical version and one is the extended version forced out of Miramax by fanatics - both are shite - a nice two disk set from Peter Jackson would be nice.)

More later...

Nice choices! What about Slacker? Would love to see some extra features on that one.

Naked and Amateur, absolutely!
In fact, I'd like to get my hands on anything by Hal HArtely up to and including Henry Fool.
One movie I'd definitley like to see released on disc is Royal Flash, directed by Richard Lester and based on the Flashman character created by George MacDonald-Fraser. It's not a great movie but it is still quite enjoyable and somewhat reminiscnet of Lester's Three Musketeers and Four Musketeers movies.
I'd also like to get my hands on discs of Go Tell the Spartans and Boys in Company C.

I dunno...

I loved Hal Hartley up to "Amateur". (The last line in this, my favorite Hartley film, just kills me.)

It's such a great film that encompasses and even surpasses everything he's done before.

Not so sure of Flirt though, as it tried a concept that failed rather miserably (in my opinion - not that it matters), but I'd love to see "The Book of Life", for the simple fact that Martin Donovan as Jesus and PJ Harvey as Magdalena is just too good to ignore.. :)

I like "Slacker", although it didn't hit me on a gut level. Although, were it on DVD I would definately give it another run through. (But then, I'd probably pick up "Gummo" first... haha)

Good point, I'd completely forgotten about Flirt (and for good reason).
Book of Life is pretty good. Caught it at the viff a few years ago and have seen it once or twice since then.
I guess I should speciify that I'd be quite happy with The Unbelievable Truth, Trust, Simple Men, Amateur, Henry Fool and Surviving Desire on disc.

I just rented 'Survivng Desire' through Netflix and got a nostalgic high off it. 'Simple Men' is just brilliant and 'Amateur' is Hartley at his best. I thought 'Henry Fool' was the most complex and, sort of, weaved Hartley's whole Long Island ouevre into a resolved, yet unresolved, point. I only saw it once in the theatre and would love to see it DVD'd.

I have a bit of a weekness for 'Slacker.' It was the first "independent" film that turned me on to a new genre of movie going. I remember seeing the tiny add in the Calendar section and wondering what it was all about. Linklater really hit something when he made that film-right place and right time.

Hell, I'm still amazed that Linklater could make a movie like Slacker and pull it off. I talked a friend of mine into watching Slacker before going to the theater to catch Waking Life and to my amazement she loved both movies. Pretty surprising considering she absolutely will not watch movies from outside the mainstream without my persistant nagging and reassurances that it'll be well worth her time.

'Waking Life' is great. I haven't seen the DVD though. Might just buy that one. I did get a little worried that Linklater was strapped for ideas though. The reoccurring characters from 'Before Sunrise' and 'Slacker' were drawn in nicely but I felt that the film could've stood within its own reality without the tie-in. Could anyone tell me if 'Tape' is worth the time? I haven't seen that one yet and have been curious.

the film pretty much takes place in one setting...ethan's m/hotel room. mightve made an interesting play.

I would like to see Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" on Dvd.
It would be nice if they released a Dvd copy of the super deluxe ultra rare "Frighteners" laserdisc and include the 4 hour documentary.

I just wanted to let you know that Heavenly Creatures is available on DVD. I have wanted to see theis movie for some time, and the reason that I know its available is because it's in my Netflix rental que. I think that Disney released it about 6 months ago. Anyhow, here's a couple of places where you can get it online:

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/search.cfm

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat12085&type=page&_requestid=24979

Enjoy!

Yes, Miramax very quietly released a basic, no special features, edition of Heavenyl Creatures about a year ago. Stumbled upon it by surprise at my friendly neighborhood Best Buy last Christmas some time.

Ed Wood! Absolutely! Where the hell is it??

Hilarious. I just bought the no-extras-whatsoever "The Frighteners" tonight and thought I'd drop in to say a couple of things about it.

(There's a four hour documentary on laser disc?! Ok - add this to my Heavenly Creatures comment at the start of the thread.)

Roger Ebert hated "Frighteners", like it was "Hudson Hawk" or something, and yet Andrew Turan, who hates everything I like, actually gave it a good review?

I mean, you gotta admit, they must have pitched it to the heads as "Ghostbusters meets Natural Born Killers", but it IS Peter Jackson and it's really a cool movie even if there is a faint whiff o' cheese here and there.

The only bad thing I could say about it after watching it again on DVD is the blaring overwrought soundtrack by Danny Elfman. (Could someone please sue this guy for monopolizing the soundtrack industry? He's already typified 90's film.) I mean, I can't watch movies with his music in them without thinking of Beetlejuice or The Simpsons. (Maybe this is why Darkman didn't go as well as it could have alongside Batman that year!)

Anyway, if you're a big fan of Peter Jackson or think it's nostalgic to pair Micheal J. Fox and Robert Zemeckis again it's worth another look.

(Why didn't they get Christopher Lloyd in there somewhere? :))

Highlight of the film? Jeffery Combs as the absolutely shell-shocked undercover-cult-following FBI agent from hell. It's right up there with "Herbert West" and "Dinosaur Bob". (Combs is one of my favorite "B" movie character actors.)

I always thought Jeffery Rush was the Vincent Price of our generation, but I think Combs fits the bill a little more snugly.

Oh yeah - and the Lucy character is a bit of a tramp, don't you think? I mean, if my wife was all hot and bothered for a guy, that had just ripped me off for 500 bucks and right after I kicked it, I'd be a little preturbed.

Yeah, this is the one HC fans pressured Alliance and Miramax into releasing with the extra 9 minutes or so edited back into it. Not the theatrical version - and no features.

I think it was on the first extended LOTR that Peter Jackson said he was apparently not fond of "Director's Cuts" and so I can't imagine he'd put his blessing on the "extended" HC. Anyone seen the end of this particular disk? (won't spoil it) But, anyone wish they would have just left the fucking thing alone?

I haven't seen the other version of 'Heavenly Creatures.' I thought the movie was brilliant the first time I saw it in the theater. Director's cuts or extended versions can be frustrating but sometimes necessary (ex. 'True Romance.')

A little of the topic, but sepaking of unreleased DVDs, when is Larry David gonna get off his duff and release the first two seasons of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm?' My wife and I have been waiting to repeatedly watch the episode simply called 'The Doll' since it first aired. A first-rate classic from start to finish.

Domestically speaking, I wouldn't mind seeing deluxe editions of "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain" released on DVD, especially if Jodorowsky can be persuaded to do commentary on both of them... but as long as Allen Klein lives, it's just not gonna happen.

And yes, definitive special editions of El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre would be very welcome on disc.

Anyone else want the original version, and director's cut, of Blade Runner in a box set?

I know I would.

That you can't get this on DVD, especially now that Peter Jackson has announced his remake going into production, really puzzles me. The 76 Dino DeLaurentiis remake is available and this one isn't?

Good call on Ed Wood ...

Amateur is coming out on DVD, according to reel.com, in about three weeks. I don't know what the extras will be, but it is a great movie, even if it comes out on a bare-bones DVD.

As for Jodorowsky, I could stand to have "Sante Sangre" released as well.

Some films I'm always looking for on DVD:

Alligator (classic gators-in-the sewers movie, written by John Sayles!)

Jack Frost (the good one, not the lame Michael Keaton of the same title)

And 2 which I'd love to find letterboxed:

Piranha -- the current pan and scan version is very frustrating, as the film is fairly well shot and features the talents of John Sayles (again the screenwriter), Joe Dante, Peter Kuran, Rob Bottin, Phil Tippet, and Roger Corman. It's a who's who of 80s horror filmmakers while they were still young!

Cannibal Holocaust -- I have a pan and scan version, which can be tough enough to find on its own, so I guess I can't complain too much...

Hardware. There was supposedly a new release of Hardware coming out this summer but it was cancelled. Argh. My favorite B-grade Aliens/Terminator rip off.

This year saw a few of my biggies I thought I'd never see on DVD get released though: The Paper Chase and Naked Lunch. Woo hoo.

"Amateur" is now out on dvd. I saw it on the shelf at Virgin this past weekend. Also "Ed Wood" is on its way to dvd in two months.

I'm still waiting on MGM to release all those great Bergman films, "Hour Of The Wolf", "Persona", "Fanny & Alexander", and "The Serpent's Egg"... now, that's some stuff to look forward to.

Also a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I want "The Forbidden Zone" to come out to dvd.

Best,

bloodshotpix....it's funny you should mention Ingmar Bergman.

On February 10th, MGM is releasing "The Ingmar Bergman Collection" which has five movies of his in the pack: Persona, Shame, The Passion of Anna, Hour of the Wolf, and The Serpent's Egg. Now I'm going to quote from dvdfile.com, which is where I got this info:

"Each includes a new audio commentary by Bergman biographer Marc Gervais, a still gallery and trailers, and in respective order, one featurette per release: "A Poem in Images, "The Search for Humanity," "Disintegration of Passion," "The Search for Sanity" and "Away from Home." The Serpent's Egg also includes an additional featurette, "German Expressionism." Retail is $24.95 each"

That's right. Each of them are being sold separately as well. However, all of them together in one set includes a bonus 6th disc, which has:

"the "Sven Nykvist: With One Eye He Cries" and "Faro Island Mystique" featurettes, the "intermezzo 2002" Swedish TV special, a 1970 interview with Bergman, the "Film-Making in Sweden" article gallery, a still gallery including never-before-seen, intimate photos from Bergman's personal archives, and a poster montage. Retail for the box set is $112.95."

So if you're a Bergman fan, which it sounds like you are, get ready to cough up whatever amount of money this set is likely to cost wherever you buy your DVDs from.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but has 'Lost Highway' been released on DVD yet? Call me behind by half a decade or so but I have not yet seen it and want to view the correct/widescreen version. I'm still pretty burned about seeing the censored/video version of 'Mulholland Drive.'

Now that we finally have TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT and TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, what about some more classics? Where is OUT OF THE PAST, THE SEA HAWK, CAPTAIN BLOOD? Where's MURDER, MY SWEET? BRINGING UP BABY? (WHAT'S UP DOC, for that matter?)

Are the Michael Mann/Jimmy Stewart "hardboiled" westerns on DVD yet? Or BLOOD ON THE MOON with Mitchum and Preston?

The one Special Edition DVD I want to see is made above all others is "Creepshow" (and by extension "Creepshow 2") with a gaggle of extras.

- Commentary by Stephen King and George Romero
- Commentary by Tom Savini and Michael Gornick
- A full size, all colour comic book like the one featured in the movie (complete with voodoo doll ads)
- Documentary on the making of the effects
- Retrospective on Creepshow by cast and crew.
- Deleted Scenes
- Trailers and TV spots
- Behind the scenes footage and outtakes
- Fake "World Premiere" Movie Ticket Stub from The Castle Rock Theatre

That would just rock like nothing else.

Schlinder's List?

Rory L. Aronsky
12-28-2003, 12:09 AM
Schindler's List will be released on DVD on March 9th from Universal.

The extra features, according to thedigitalbits.com (and Amazon), are "Voices From the List" and "Behind The Shoah Foundation with Steven Spielberg" featurettes, cast and filmmaker bios, and "something called About Oskar Schindler (a featurette or text essay). There may also be trailers and the like."

There is also going to be a Schindler's List gift set which includes (according to Amazon): "widescreen DVD, Schindler’s List: Images of the Steven Spielberg Film book, CD Soundtrack, senitype, and certificate of authenticity enclosed in an limited edition oversized plexiglas case"

It appears that some of you haven't really done that much looking for the DVDs you are "wishing" for.

Weird Science just got a rerelease...it was out of print for a while, but is now back in circulation...WS, but no extras.

Ed Wood is coming out as a 2DVD set in January...I just ordered a bunch of them for our store...

Amateur did come out last month...Henry Fool is out too...Simple Men is finally getting released next month.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season one is coming up in February...

Anyway, hope this clears up some info for all y'all who were in the dark. Unfortunately, you can't buy DVDs from our online store yet, but if you live in New England, head over to Newbury Comics to pick up any of these titles.

BTW, that Frighteners LD box set is worth whatever you pay for it...the documentaries, extra footage, and Jackson commentary are all well worth it!! No word on there ever being a deluxe release of this on DVD...there's just not enough demand for it...

I would like to see it available on DVD in addition to some of the old Criterion LDs that never made it to DVD...Taxi Driver and Raging Bull especially!! Speaking of...how about the original cut of Blade Runner?!?

I would think that with the gargantuan success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Universal would be nuts NOT to release the mega-deluxe DVD version of The Frighteners... but since Peter Jackson is remaking King Kong for Universal next year, it's only gonna be a matter of time until we see The Frighteners DVD with all bells and whistles intact.

Four beautiful films from the mid- to late-sixties are missing from DVD:

The Loved One (1965)
A Guide for the Married Man (1966)
The Fearless Vampire Killers, or: Pardon Me but Your Teeth Are in My Neck (1967)
How I Won the War (1967)

I emailed MGM long ago about The Loved One, How I Won the War and Fearless Vampire Killers, but of course that did no good (and never will). How I Won the War has been postponed forever, and I can't find anything else out about it.
