Fan-fucking-tastic!
I was pretty disappointed with the original DotD DVD, but this Anchor Bay re-issue is worth every penny.
The picture quality is an order of magnitude above the first. This is what all this digital technology SHOULD be used for. The muddy shadows and dark colors are gone, replaced by the imagery Uncle George wanted in the first place. The details are crisp, the colors are vibrant (especially the gore), and the audio is excellent. I forgot I was watching a 1985-era film.
And the 2nd disc full of extras just makes it better. A 39-minute doc made this year features almost all the principals, including Bub but not Dr. Logan. They relate the story of the production, including the original draft of the script that would have cost twice as much to shoot; some early concept sketches are shown in the doc. There's also a 31-minute reel of Tom Savini's own video footage, mainly consisting of makeup tests, application and removal, and the replay footage George was using to check his takes. There's even an 8-minute promotional video describing the Wampum Mine's (where they shot everything but the opening) new life as a massive underground warehouse facility.
If you're a Romero fan, you were disappointed with the first DotD DVD, or you're just looking for one of the best 80's horror films, get this Anchor Bay release.
