I know that provocation is a quality in this kind of opinion piece article, but come on... schwarzenegger means 'black nigger'? have you ever studied german? don't you think it would've been a good idea to check that one out with someone who speaks german before posting it on the website?
schwartzen = black, or dark haired (often men with dark hair were called "Black So and So" - for example, Norman Schwarzkopf, the general guy from the first gulf war... 'kopf' means 'head', by the way, not 'negro' or 'colored person'...)
egger = plower or harrower
Ergo, a dark-haired farmer gave his name to the illustrious Shwarzenegger scion whom we know today.

For the record, "neger" means "nigger" in German. It's prounounced NAY-gr, not NEG-gr. That's probably where the confusion lies.
"Schwarz" means "black," which is why Jews refer to black people as the "schwarzen." The "en" is an adjective ending. It must agree with the object being described by the adjective in number, gender, and case, which in this case is singular, masculine, and objective. Thus, "Schwarzenegger" becomes "black farmer."

...and all along I thought "Schwarz" meant "penis" and "enegger" meant "ovular" or "egg shaped" - in other words, "skull-like".
...or was that Schwantz...hmm...

The offending party here ... again.
I stand by my assertion of what his name translates to. It was told to me by my German teacher back in the '80s. I don't think "black farmer" fits, though it could. Apparently, Arnie had some problems with his racist side when he got to this country and sought some sort of therapy for it. That doesn't necessarily mean his name automatically is racist, but it doesn't help his defense. For the record: Schwarzen = blacks. neger=nigger. neger can also mean Negro or blackamoor.

I should stress that I realize Schwarzen uses the "n" from "neger." (Note the one "g.") I think that may be intentional that Arnie or his family did years ago. Sort of like Ottoman being reduced to Otto. I don't see Arnie as coming from a family of black farmers. Maybe. Probably not. However, the racist angle may hold up. Do I believe he's racist now? No. Is it curious? Most definitely. That same German teacher, when laughing at the class' collective gasp at the translation said something along the lines of "Look it up. Look up his family and the region they lived in. You'll understand." I always thought that was a little odd ... especially coming from a die-hard German we always joked was a Nazi. Anyway, thanks for reading.

Well, you said it yourself. It's the region his family comes from. In southern Germany there's an area called "Die Schwarzwald," which translates as "The Black Forest." This area spills over into Austria as well.
I'd heard that Arnie's family hailed from that part of the country, which was why his name means "black farmer."
As far as the German teacher's translation, I have one question: was the teacher a native speaker, i.e. born in Deutschland? Of all the German teachers I've had (HS and college), only one was a native Deutschlander. Because she had that cultural immersion, she could give me more shaded translations than a straightlaced textbook. She's the one who told me the usage of the term "geil," as opposed to its literal meaning.

I hate to beat a dead German, but ... yes, my German teacher was a native of the Fatherland. He pounded it home to us everyday when he would rant about us "lazy American kids" and so on and so on. "In Germany we would..." and then describe how they cured cancer or something.
