Follow the trials of a young man brought into a clan of immortals against his will. Near Dark(1987) reunites Lance Henriksen, Bill paxton and Jeanette Goldstein from Aliens(1986). This vampire movie puts a new spin on the genre steering away from the traditional religious symbols used to battle vampires(crucifixes, holy water, bibles) and in fact takes jabs at the religious icons: Jesse (Henriksen) has a cross on the handle of his gun and the motel they sleep at in the movie is called The Godspeed Motel. James Legros (Phantasm 2, Drugstore Cowboy)has a bit part in the movie also. Near Dark never gives you the full history of the vampires but drops subtle hints throughout the movie of their history and exploits. Near Dark was released in Oct. 1987 by the DeLaurentiis Entertainment Group which was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time so very little money was spent on advertising. In addition to the lack of advertising Near Dark came out a few weeks after the huge budget Lost Boys and disappeared about two weeks after it's release. The HBO home video came out not to long after that and found a newer bigger audience but the video went out of print in the mid-90s. In my humble opinion this is the best vampire movie ever made.
